Technician - Pre-Requisites and Limitations

There is a pre-requisite for enrollment in the Propane Heater Certification program. This ensures applicants have sufficient technical and mechanical skills to succeed. Applicants must also be directly employed by a BC registered Rental Company with a current Technical Safety BC operating permit.  Applicants must have a minimum of 1 year experience working full time in a service maintenance position or a minimum 2nd-year apprentice towards an industrial trade ticket.   

Special Purpose Certificate of Qualification

As per Technical Safety BC Directive D-GA-2018-01.  This will allow an individual with specialized gas equipment training to apply for a Special Purpose Gas Certificate of Qualification (SPCQ) from Technical Safety BC.  The SPCQ certificate will be limited in scope. It will entitle the holder to perform only regulated work as specified by the certificate and only under the conditions endorsed on the certificate.  The SPCQ would be valid for a limited period of up to a maximum of 3 years.

MODULE 1 - Principles for Portable Gas-Fired Heaters

Provides the learner with general knowledge of the inspection and maintenance of portable gas-fired heaters, including propane properties and characteristics.  This section will cover the broader aspects of technical knowledge and competency required for all portable gas-fired heaters 400,000Btuh or less.   

MODULE 2 - Skills Evaluations for Manufacturer Heater Endorsements

Instruction will include practical, hands-on assessments working with specific heaters.  Students will gain practical experience in the service, maintenance and inspection of specific heaters and be required to demonstrate knowledge learned in the classroom.     Students must successfully complete ‘Section 1 - Principles of Portable Gas Fired Heaters’ to be eligible to proceed. Section 2 covers specific makes and models of heaters and is separated into two categories based on heater types.  Category 1 covers direct-fired heaters and includes both ductable and non-ductable types.  Category 2 covers indirect-fired heaters.
