Workplace Health & Safety Program Development

Ensuring employees have a safe and healthy workplace is critical as productivity, profitability, and employee morale depend on it. Below are a few reasons why investing in an effective health and safety management system is essential.

Reduce Workplace Accidents

Effective health and safety programs reduce workplace accidents, injuries, and illnesses. Workplace incidents can have severe consequences for employees and employers, including lost work time, medical expenses, and reduced productivity. They can also identify potential risks and hazards and provide training to employees on how to identify and address them. Protecting employees from harm is not only the right thing to do, it reduces workers' compensation claims, costs, and legal liabilities.

Increase Productivity & Morale

A safe and healthy workplace can improve employee satisfaction, productivity, and morale. Employees who feel safe can focus on their work without worrying about their health. An effective health and safety program improves employee engagement by empowering employees to speak up about potential hazards and concerns. It also builds trust, enhances teamwork & communication, and increases productivity.

Comply with the Law

Regulatory compliance is a critical component of health and safety programs. Following safety regulations and guidelines ensures your organization is meeting legal obligations. Meeting and exceeding health and safety regulations also provides competitive advantages. Clients, customers, and potential employees prefer working with organizations that prioritize employee health and safety programs.

Reduce Costs

Effective health and safety programs reduce costs associated with accidents, injury and illness. By identifying and mitigating potential hazards, your organization can prevent costly incidents from occurring. This can include but is not limited to medical expenses, litigation, lost production, and replacement or repair of damaged equipment.

Investing in an effective health and safety program provides many advantages and benefits to your employees and your organization. The initial cost is small compared to the potential savings and benefits.

  • Fall Protection and Working at Heights Programs (WAH) should be a fundamental part of any organization’s overall Occupational Health and Safety Management System for those required to work at heights.

TeamWorks program development professionals can help minimize the risk to your workers who are required to perform cleaning, maintenance, service, repair, inspection or other work at heights. A well-developed Working at Heights policy protects employees against fall hazards through up-to-date policies, safe work procedures, hazard control, and training.

It is the responsibility of every employer to ensure the health and safety of all individuals involved with working at heights. Workers must be competent and trained in the safe use of fall protection equipment and abide by the procedures as outlined in your Working at Heights Program.

All recognized programs must follow the legislation, guidelines, principles and recommendations established by WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and Guidelines Part 11 and G11: Fall Protection, the Canadian Standards Association - Z259 series and Z1009:22 Management of Work at Heights as well as any industry best practices.

  • De-energization and Lockout Programs should be fundamental to every organization’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System. A well-designed and implemented Lockout Program minimizes the risk to workers required to perform maintenance, service, repair, inspection or other work on machinery and equipment. These procedures protect all employees against releasing hazardous and residual (stored) energy in machinery and equipment.

TWS Lockout Programs is based on technical information from WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation Part 10: De-energization and Lockout, and CSA Z460-20 Control of Hazardous Energy – Lockout and other methods, applicable directives from other Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and industry best practices.

A well-developed Lockout policy ensures that no individual shall engage in workplace activity that includes maintaining, repairing, cleaning, or servicing machinery and equipment without proper training in de-energization and lockout of hazardous energy. All employees must be trained in de-energization and lockout and abide by the procedures outlined in the program.

As part of any Lockout Policy, a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) should be conducted for all machinery and equipment before work is done. The JHA will be used to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all machinery, equipment, and processes on all worksites.

  • Confined Space Entry Programs are designed to provide guidelines to protect workers’ health and safety when working in or around confined spaces. A proper Confined Space Program assists supervisors and workers in understanding their rights, responsibilities and requirements for a safe confined space entry.

Anyone entering, supervising entry, providing rescue services, providing monitoring of the atmosphere of the confined space, or acting as a standby person must receive the appropriate training in advance and demonstrate their understanding of proper entry protocols.

Employers and supervisors are responsible for a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. The purpose of an established Confined Space Program is to ensure:

    • All confined spaces have been identified, and a qualified person has performed and documented formal ‘Hazard Assessments.’

    • All hazards are identified and controlled, including preventing unauthorized persons from entering confined spaces.

    • Written Safe Work Procedures have been developed by skilled, competent persons and are followed by those responsible for working in and around confined spaces.

    • Provide formal training for all personnel working in and around confined spaces.

    • Affected employees must also be made aware of the fundamentals of confined spaces and the importance of following safe work practices and written procedures.
